what they're saying
“Sally...was perceptive about what the potential move might mean for me and did a superb job connecting me to people at the U of M who could also offer insights on the decision. She also helped to put in perspective the question of a joint appointment. I did make the move and am very satisfied both with it and with the decision process that Sally helped to facilitate.”

Leadership Development; Study of Self
Leadership counts, from the individual administrator, to each faculty member, department chair, dean and beyond. Within Academe leadership is about influence rather than authority. Influencing human behavior is one of the most difficult challenges leaders face. This workshop provides a road map to self knowledge of how to link one's vision and values to leadership practices and the skill of influencing others in the context of your career.[ BACK TO TOP ]

Becoming a Successful Academic; A Roadmap for Post Docs and New Faculty
Staying the course toward Associate Professor involves developing plans of action that are intentional, realistic, and successful in accomplishing your teaching, research and publishing goals. It is imperative to tease out essential tasks from secondary tasks and to recognize the need for your focus to shift over the course of the first six or seven years before you come up for tenure. This reflective workshop will explore examples from participants related to priority setting and deciding on plans of action. Participants will gain a greater sense of clarity regarding where to invest their time and energy over the next 12 - 18 months.

Mastering the Academic Hiring Process
This informative workshop describes the academic job search process from the search committee and institutional perspectives and is designed to give participants the skills to understand the search through the eyes of the very people they will be trying to entice. A comprehensive overview covering the hiring process for tenure track positions from internal authorization to hire at a given rank to what to expect for the campus interview itinerary's commonly developed at both teaching and research universities. In addition to gaining a deeper understanding of the complex hiring process and behind the scenes dynamics, participants will also walk away with practical tips that can be immediately applied to their own search.

Multitasking in the Academy; Managing Stress and Competing Demands
Teaching, research, publishing, administrative responsibilities, writing grants, service, mentoring, net working (not to mention a well balanced and fulfilling personal life).
The roles of an academic are constantly intertwining with one another, but how do you manage all of related tasks without getting tied up in knots? Time management is paramount. This highly interactive workshop will help participants refocus on the basics of solid time management and organizational skills such as managing email efficiently, structuring your time wisely, organizing your office and developing lists that facilitate productivity verses anxiety. Participants will leave the workshop with an organized inventory of their own work, practiced efficient email management and applied time management strategies to their own calendar for the upcoming month.

Becoming a Successful Academic Administrator
Most academics are prepared to be intellectual leaders within their field. Few have had the opportunity to receive the training and mentoring necessary to become administrative leaders within their department or institution. Many people feel unprepared for their new role. Using the Jossey - Bass Academic Administrators Guide to Exemplary Leadership (Kouzes and Posner) this workshop will highlight the five best practices of exemplary leadership in higher education and provide a confidential forum for new leaders to explore how to apply these practices within their institutions.
